Diddy screams at his lawyer in first footage from Sean Combs doc the Reckoning: we’re losing

Netflix has released the full trailer for Sean Combs’ controversial new docuseries, sparking renewed debate over the life and legacy of the music mogul known as Diddy. The preview drops fresh footage, voices from his inner circle and courtroom figures, and promises a deep, sometimes uncomfortable look at the events that led to his criminal case.

Trailer opens with tense, never-before-seen hotel call

The 56-second trailer begins with raw footage from a Manhattan hotel room on September 10, 2024. In it, a visibly strained Combs talks on the phone with his lawyer, grappling with an escalating legal crisis. At one point he says, “We have to find somebody that’ll work with us that has dealt in the dirtiest of dirty business,” then lashes out in frustration, shouting, “We’re losing!”

That exchange sets the tone for a series that positions intimate recordings and unseen clips at the center of its narrative.

Who speaks on camera: names and perspectives

The docuseries includes interviews from former collaborators, reality TV alumni and people tied to the legal proceedings. Contributors span a wide and sometimes unexpected range.

  • Aubrey O’Day and other Making the Band alums.
  • Qwanell “Que” Mosley, Brian Andrews, and former group members.
  • Members of the R&B groups and peers such as Willie Taylor and Robert Curry.
  • Kirk Burrowes, cofounder of Bad Boy Entertainment.
  • Former Bad Boy artist Mark Curry, whose voice appears in early clips.
  • An alleged victim identified as Joi Dickerson-Neal.
  • Family connections, including William Lesane, a cousin of Tupac Shakur.
  • And even jurors from the United States v. Combs trial.

The producers say these interviews offer firsthand recollections from those once close to Combs and from people directly involved in the trial.

50 Cent’s involvement and when the project started

Rapper and producer 50 Cent is listed as an executive producer. He first announced plans for a documentary on Combs in December 2023. At the time, a string of civil claims and news reports had put the Bad Boy founder in the spotlight.

Netflix picked up the project in September 2024, days after Combs’ arrest on federal charges tied to allegations of prostitution, racketeering and sex trafficking. Combs has consistently denied criminal wrongdoing.

Format, episode count and the material promised

The series will span four hourlong episodes. Netflix bills it as containing “explosive, never-before-seen materials.”

A shorter teaser arrived on November 25 and hinted at the approach: archival footage, exclusive interviews, and voices from inside the orbit of Bad Boy Records. One early clip features Mark Curry saying the abuse could not continue without consequence, a line that appears again in the longer preview.

Behind the camera: director’s view and cultural questions

Director Alexandria Stapleton frames the project as more than a portrait of a celebrity. She has described the film as a social mirror, examining how culture treats famous men and how the public processes allegations against them.

Stapleton has said Cassie’s decision to drop a lawsuit influenced the documentary’s direction. That choice, she argued, made the story a test of cultural change—how we handle accusations and how the court of public opinion reacts.

The filmmaker hopes the series prompts viewers to reconsider pedestal-making and to see celebrity figures as fallible humans.

Legal fallout: conviction, sentence and appeals

Combs went on trial and the proceedings concluded in July 2024. The jury returned mixed verdicts: guilty on two counts related to transportation, and not guilty on three others.

In October, a federal judge sentenced him to 50 months in prison and ordered five years of supervised release. Combs is actively seeking to overturn the conviction through appeals.

Release schedule and what to expect on streaming day

Sean Combs: The Reckoning premieres on Netflix on December 2. Viewers can expect four full episodes available to stream.

The series promises a blend of archival footage, new interviews and legal excerpts. Producers say the aim is to present a comprehensive view of events and the people affected by them.
