HBO’s anthology hit The White Lotus has surprised viewers not just with its plot twists, but with several last-minute casting changes. Actors were swapped for a mix of political, creative and scheduling reasons, reshaping key roles across recent seasons.
Major casting updates and the context behind them
As the show moved from Hawaii and Sicily to Thailand for season 3, the ensemble list grew long and starry. Production ramped up in early 2024, and some roles shifted hands after filming began in February.

- Season 3 principal cast: Leslie Bibb, Carrie Coon, Walton Goggins, Sarah Catherine Hook, Jason Isaacs, Lalisa Manobal, Michelle Monaghan, Sam Nivola, Lek Patravadi, Parker Posey, Natasha Rothwell, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Tayme Thapthimthong, and Aimee Lou Wood.
- Despite the initial announcements, a handful of characters were recast before or during shooting.
Why the role of Aleksei was recast
Political backlash and a rapid replacement
Actor Miloš Biković was listed among the early additions. Within weeks, HBO removed him from the project.
The decision followed public criticism from Ukraine’s foreign ministry. They objected to casting an actor who had voiced support for Russia during the ongoing conflict.
HBO later named Julian Kostov as the new Aleksei. Biković responded angrily, saying the move felt like an attack on artistic freedom.
What changed with the character Chloe
Age and creative direction influenced the swap
Francesca Corney initially landed the part of Chloe. After production began, she was replaced by Charlotte Le Bon.
Creator Mike White and his casting team decided the role should skew older than first envisioned. That shift in vision prompted the recast.
Corney posted on social media that losing the job was painful. She also thanked the cast and crew and promised to cheer on the new season.
Late additions: How Frank became Sam Rockwell’s role
Scheduling bumps and quick prep work
The role of Frank eventually went to Sam Rockwell, but that casting came together at the eleventh hour.
Leslie Bibb, who is Rockwell’s wife, explained he was wrapping a shoot in South Africa and had little prep time. Producers reached out at the last minute.
Bibb said she helped him get ready fast, including running lines on a South African safari so he could jump into production.
Season 4 shake-up: Helena Bonham Carter exits, Laura Dern joins
Character scrapped and a new role created
Early into season 4 filming, HBO announced that Helena Bonham Carter would no longer appear in the series.
Producers said the part originally written for her did not ultimately fit with the direction of the story. Rather than recast the same character, the role was dropped.
Laura Dern was later added to the season in a role developed specifically for her. HBO said the team remains a fan of Bonham Carter and hopes to collaborate in the future.
