The new Netflix film about actor Matthew Perry has reopened painful memories and shared new details about who gathered at his funeral. Family members speak candidly in the documentary, and rare recollections shed light on how Perry’s loved ones — including his former Friends castmates — marked his passing.
How the documentary frames Perry’s final farewell
The hour-long feature centers on intimate accounts from Matthew Perry’s family. His sister, Mia Perry Bowick, recounts the scene at the funeral and the mixture of grief and unexpected levity that surfaced among mourners.

Bowick describes a surreal moment when she sensed her brother’s presence and found herself laughing amid the sorrow. That memory anchors a sequence in the film that blends heartbreak with the sharp, irreverent humor Perry was known for.
Which Friends actors attended the open-casket service
Bowick says several members of the Friends ensemble were present. According to her account, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc joined family and close friends.
She recalls Aniston approaching her first with a warm embrace, and all five performers walking together to the casket. Bowick remembers them holding hands and visibly mourning as they stood near Perry.
Why the cast did not appear in the film
The documentary does not include on-camera interviews with any of the Friends stars. Director Mary Robertson says the filmmakers invited the cast, but each chose not to participate.
Robertson told press she understood the decision. She framed Mia’s on-screen storytelling as a necessary and raw family perspective that the documentary set out to preserve.
Official findings and the events around Perry’s death
Perry rose to fame as Chandler Bing on the NBC sitcom Friends. He died at age 54 after emergency responders found him unresponsive at a Los Angeles residence.

Early reports linked his death to the effects of ketamine. A later toxicology report from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office listed drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine as contributing factors.
The death was ruled an accident. An initial probe was closed in January 2024, then later reopened as more information emerged.
